Full plant extract VS isolated compounds

These days when it comes to purchasing CBD, users have access to more products than ever before.

All CBD products can be purchased legally online and in stores now all over the world and the best thing about it is- none of the products will get you high or stoned.

Currently there are two types of primary cannabis extractions out there. These are known as “full spectrum” and “isolates”. The cannabis plant is packed with chemicals which are known as cannabinoids. The relative ones however, are CBD and THC.

Due to its non-psychoactive beneficial properties, Cannabidiol (CBD) has become a very popular option for people who are looking to support and maintain great health. However, sometimes a user can be faced with choosing between CBD isolate or full spectrum. So, what exactly is the difference between the two?

What gives cannabis its phenomenal character, is the hundreds of other chemicals it contains.

Unlike most medicines, cannabis contains a huge range of chemical compounds. In fact, scientists have actually identified over 60 of the molecules in marijuana which are known as cannabinoids (including the well-known CBD and THC). Many other non-cannabinoid compounds are also produced by the plant that have direct effects too. In other words, cannabis is made up of thousands of different chemicals that work together to produce different effects. Change the recipe and you change the effect!

What is the Entourage Effect?

The “Enoutrage Effect” happens when hundreds of these natural components in the cannabis plant interact with our bodies to produce stronger influence on us than one part of the plant being used alone.

Some other drugs do seem to work well as single compounds, however, research suggests that cannabis offers the most outstanding aids as a WHOLE plant. In other words, ALL of the components of the cannabis plant likely have some beneficial effects, more than any single compound alone!

CBD Isolate

When it comes to isolate, the oil, once extracted, is cooled until it forms crystals. The crystals are then processed into a powder. In this extraction method, the powder or “isolate” results in a single molecular compound of strictly CBD. There are no other molecular compounds of value found in the powder.

Isolates are often used as it’s better to control the dosage and overall experience a consumer has with the cannabis product.

The whole plant approach on the other hand attempts to retain as many trace cannabinoids as possible, not just THC or CBD. This means that there are substantially more nutrients in a full extract cannabis product than there are in an isolate.

There are a wide variety of situations when CBD isolate would be preferred over Full Spectrum CBD. For example, you may not necessarily need the full capabilities of Full Spectrum CBD, or if you aren’t legally allowed to use THC.

Full Spectrum

Whole plant (full extract) refers to extracts and products made from the whole cannabis plant. THC and CBD are simply components in cannabis resins. Altogether, the cannabis plant is capable of producing over 400 different chemical compounds. At least 113 of which are chemicals like THC and CBD called cannabinoids.

A “full-spectrum cannabinoid” refers to the plant extraction to oil, which includes all other properties or molecules of value in the marijuana plant. In other words, when the plant is extracted for oils, the properties and components that are part of that – such as terpenes and THC, for example – is still existent in its extracted form.

The molecules of the “whole plant” remain intact in the processed extracted oil. In this extraction process, there is little to no loss of any of the other compounds that work in tandem with the CBD’s compromised or eliminated through the process, hence allowing for what is called the “full entourage effect,” which is derived from the whole plant extraction method.

How do they compare?

If you’re hoping to take advantage of the rich nutrient density of the cannabis plant, whole plant medicine is the winner. Full extract cannabis oils and other whole plant products simply contain more nutrient diversity than an isolate.

However, isolates can still be extremely useful. A study proved that a CBD isolate is only as effective as its dose, while full-spectrum CBD continues to provide relief as the dosage increases. Full-spectrum CBD extract has qualities that can aid health that cannot be bought over the counter.

Many people go out of their ways to try and create single compound cannabis medicines but, studies have shown this is LESS effective than using the whole plant extract because what the most powerful part of cannabis is, is the combination of different elements in the plant and the different effects they have on different people.

It has been shown that lots of cannabinoids, ketones, esters, lactones, alcohols, fatty acids, steroids and terpenes (which are all included in the cannabis plant) are better for us as a whole…not separated.
