Phil De Fries Makes History As Longest Reigning Champion In KSW History

CBDLife sponsored athlete Phil De Fries is set to break yet another record by becoming the longest reigning MMA champion in KSW history.

The TFT MMA Heavyweight picked up his 13th consecutive win at KSW 95 on June 8 in a tough 25 minute affair against 9 fight UFC veteran Augusto Sakai. With the successful title defense, the 38-year-old has now held the strap since 2018.

In just shy of three weeks, De Fries will break yet another record and becoming the longest reigning champion in KSW history. This is to add to a multitude of records the Sunderland native has already broken whilst being with the promotion including, the longest active win streak, most title defences, most title fights, most wins in title fights and most stoppages in title fights.

After a difficult tenure with the UFC, De Fries returned to the domestic scene. After a few bouts back in the North East, De Fries then signed a contract with Polish promotion, KSW. In only his very first fight under the KSW banner, De Fries fought against the surging Michał Andryszak for the vacant KSW World Heavyweight title and instantly made an impact stopping Andryszak in the very first round.

With the KSW strap around his waist, De Fries has looked unstoppable, racking up 10 title defenses and securing seven stoppage victories in the process and adding some huge names to his record such as Todd Duffee and Tomasz Narkun.

Speaking to KSW following his Sakai victory, De Fries expressed his delight at being in touching distance of adding another record to his collection. He said:

“That sounds pretty great and to celebrate, after my friend’s fight, I am going to come here for a week with my family and enjoy beautiful Olsztyn and all of the beautiful lakes!”

De Fries has been very open about his previous mental health struggles and following his win at KSW 95, he delivered an inspiring message to those who may be struggling.
“I thought about, every single day, killing myself went through my head. I wasn’t happy. I made this doctor’s appointment, I saw the doctor, she gave me some medicine, and I got some therapy and in three months, I was so lucky mind, in three months I was fixed. Whereas a lot of other people have a much harder time than me.

“I was so fortunate but you just can’t give up. I was so lucky that the medicine worked first try. People always ask me ‘Oh Phil, I am struggling with anxiety. I’m struggling with depression. And at first I was saying, go to the doctor, get this medicine.

“This medicine will fix you. And nobody have recommended this medicine to. It’s helped. So I’m incredibly lucky and incredibly fortunate that this medicine worked for me. You just can’t give up. I felt worthless sometimes, but now I feel very valued. My girls love me, my wife loves me. I have good friends. I’m a champion here.

“It’s horrible, but don’t give up!”
