What are Terpenes?

The cannabis plant is one of the most unique plants out there.

Two of the features that make the cannabis plant so special are its smell and taste. For this, we must thank terpenes.

Terpenes are compounds that add to the flavour and scent of marijuana, changing how cannabinoids bind to their receptors, thereby altering their effects on the person. Terpenes originate in the same part of the cannabis plant as CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids.

Some people may have wondered why buds from cannabis of the same strain can smell and taste different. Well, it’s terpenes that are to blame for this too.

CBD and THC are the most commonly known cannabinoids that make up the cannabis plant. Terpenes-which may be totally new to you are the natural aromatic oils in the cannabis plant that let off the different smells, tastes and produce different effects on your body. Sometimes even just smelling cannabis can change how you feel. Terpenes, just like CBD and THC interact with your body.

It isn’t just cannabis that terpenes are found in either, they can be found in a range of plants as well as some fruits and flowers. They are known to stop or block some receptors in the brain yet encouraging others-altering the effects on the body.

Cannabis comes in thousands of different varieties, or strains. Different marijuana strains have very different chemical profiles that cause different effects on the same person. Each different strain of cannabis has a special profile which act together with cannabinoids to produce certain experiences. This means that if you change the recipe for a cannabis strain, you change the effects, too.

It’s no secret that cannabis affects a person’s mind, mood, emotions and behaviour. By adding different strains of terpene you can change this. It is noteworthy to mention that not all types of terpenes work the same, either. Some types may influence the brain in a way as to relax us while others have the opposite effect, lifting our mood and energy levels.

Terpenes are responsible for the aroma of cannabis and are perfectly safe. They are common constituents of flavourings and fragrances. Cannabis’s captivating fragrance and particular flavour are determined by the dominant terpenes in a strain.

The strains can vary massively from one source, or even one harvest to another.
